was 4,622 at the 2000 census. The town is a part of the Greenville Metropolitan
Area of North Carolina's Inner Banks region.

Demographics
As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 4,622 people, 1,936 households, and
1,217 families residing in the town. The population density was 769.2/km˛
(1,994.5/mi˛). There were 2,067 housing units at an average density of 344.0/km˛
(892.0/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town was 47.64% White, 49.52% African
American, 0.17% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.32% from
other races, and 1.10% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race
were 2.21% of the population.
There were 1,936 households out of which 27.6% had children under the age of 18
living with them, 38.4% were married couples living together, 20.3% had a female
householder with no husband present, and 37.1% were non-families. 33.1% of all
households were made up of individuals and 17.8% had someone living alone who
was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the
average family size was 3.02.
In the town the population was spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 7.4%
from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65
years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there
were 78.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 70.3 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $24,004, and the median income
for a family was $34,808. Males had a median income of $30,991 versus $22,305
for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,505. About 21.0% of
